Part 5 - Preparing for Takeoff

Schrock Road Professional Building as viewed from Schrock Rd (Momentum is in suite 137)

After a surprisingly rapid suite overhaul over the past 4 weeks (and I really wish you could all have seen it in its original state) I finally have a new space to call my own. Momentum DPC is now a tangible, literally-brick-and-mortar reality. Despite working 3-4 days a week in my current role as a float provider with my old company (which has actually been an enjoyable change of pace, I must admit) I have been hustling like crazy to make my new office operational in terms of serving my soon-to-be member patients.

It takes a lot of physical “stuff” those of us coming from the corporate medical realm have likely taken for granted. Things like exam tables, otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, pulse-oximeters, thermometers, scales and stadiometers (that’s the fancy technical term I recently learned for a height measuring stick). And that’s just to gather physical exam data. We also need places for people to sit and to work, and tools to keep things clean and organized. We need phones and computers. Trash cans and cleaning supplies. Paper towels. Toilet paper. Facial tissues. Rubber gloves. Hazardous waste bins. Sharps containers. Tables. Desks. Shelves. Rolling doctor stools. Tasteful decor. And so many other little things. You get the idea.

My still barren office office

My still very barren office office

I can promise you that all of these items will be almost certainly NOT be in place the first day I open, but the bare essentials are definitely covered. There’s a trope in the DPC world that all you need to see patients is “a room and a stethoscope.” And while that’s obviously a bit of an exaggeration, it’s probably closer to the truth than not. But aesthetics matter to me. Your image and people’s first impressions are pivotal for your brand and your reputation. The appearance and the sense of comfort that exists in your place of business conveys a certain level of quality you might provide to your clients. Patients are going to spend hard-earned money to be members of my practice, so it is very important to me that they feel they are getting something of great value that can’t obtain just anywhere.

We (and by “we” I mostly mean myself at the moment) will begin formal enrollment starting no later than Monday May 20th and we will begin scheduling patients at least 2 days per week beginning June 3rd. Because I still have contractual obligations with my current employer, and the likelihood that I will still not be very busy from a member-volume standpoint, I hope that this temporary inconvenience of not being physically open 5 days a week will not cause too much consternation. I promise all members will be given the time and attention they deserve, even if it requires a bit of creativity and flexibility on my part. If I need to re-arrange my schedule or make myself available at odd hours to make things work for my loyal customers (especially those early enrollees, whose faith in me and this DPC concept have truly warmed my heart) I will do whatever I can to accommodate each of you during this transition phase.

My hope is to “onboard” everyone within the first month or two, consisting of a lengthy initial visit, extensive history taking and recording. (or re-recording) We can address any present health issues, catch up on life in general if you’ve seen me previously, and also discuss the way this place of ours (and this time, by “ours” I do NOT mean just me, but us as doctor and members of this practice) can function best for everyone.

Thank you all so very much for coming on this journey with me, and for trusting me with your health and wellness. This has been an extremely gratifying experience overall, and I know it will only get better and better and better as we continue to build…momentum.

See you soon.
